Stop Fuelling War is a secular organisation that welcomes everyone of any faith or background. It was founded by Quakers who believe in the equality of all people.
Quakers try to live out their faith in the world. Quakers were founder members of many humanitarian activities and forward thinkers, including : Friends ambulance unit, civilian war relief, Kindertransport, CAAT, Amnesty International, ACAT, and Quakers were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1946 (for a detailed description 'What Have Quakers Ever Done For Us' by John Gwatkin, IBSN 978-0-9546074-2-2).

Friends work actively to make this a better world. We are particularly concerned with:

  • human rights, based on our belief in equality of all human beings
  • human rights, based on our belief in equality of all human beings
  • social justice
  • peace
  • freedom of conscience
  • environmental issues - we seek to honour creation by living simply and reduce our burden on the world
  • promoting tolerance with our communities

Quakerism is a religious movement with Christian roots that began in the 1650s. It is also known as a historic peace church and officially called the Religious Society of Friends, because they feel led to actively build a peaceful and just society.

Quakers believe that all of us are unique and precious children of God, that there is something of the divine in everyone of us. Therefore Quakers (or Friends) try to value all people equally, and oppose anything that may harm or threaten the wider human family and our creator’s world.
They seek religious truth through inner experience, and place great reliance on listening deeply. They emphasise that we can all have a direct experience of God rather than just through ritual and ceremony.
None of us are perfect, but our faith is an actively lived one, for this world of here and now, of today and tomorrow. Most of us believe God can be found in the middle of everyday life, within our human relationships, just as much as during our meeting for worship.

Among key Quaker beliefs are:

  • God is love
  • the light of God is in every single person
  • a person who lets their life be guided by this light will achieve a full relationship with our creator
  • everyone can have a direct, personal relationship with the divine without involving an (educated) priest or minister
  • we do not accept value judgements based on race or gender

Take heed, dear Friends, to the promptings of love and truth in your hearts. Trust them as the leadings of God whose Light shows us our darkness and brings us to new life.
